Each day in third grade your child will spend an hour a day on math concepts. For morning work four days a week, the students will be expected to finish 15 problems in their Simple Solutions workbook. This book spirals concepts from many different curricular areas. Due to daily exposure to the various concepts research shows an increase of retention of the concepts.

During math class I begin each lesson with whole group instruction. As a class we work through the concepts introduced and continue instruction until most of the class is comfortable to work on their own. For the remainder of the class, the students have the choice to work independently or move to my table for additional help with the lesson. If time allows they are allowed to go on to their homework when their class work is finished and checked.

We have adopted the Scholastic Fasttmath program to increase your child's math computation scores.  Two completed sessions a week are required to show improvement in math computation.  The students will work on this during their scheduled computer classes, but in order to progress extra time is expected to be completed at home as homework.

Some of the topics to be covered are:
1. place value through the thousands
2. addition and subtraction up to four- digit numbers
3. multiplication using repeated addition and arrays
4. division using related subtraction and inverse operations
5. properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
6. fractions- parts of a whole and using a number line
7. measurement
8. collecting and presenting data using graphs, pictures, tables

9. finding and measuring perimeter and area

10. geometry
